About Us
Why Gates Plastering & Stucco:
The Gates family made their start with plastering in Broome County and the surrounding area in 1959. David is a third generation plaster mason with over 35 years of experience. At the age of 10, he began learning the trade the old school way: integrity, stand behind your work, pride in your trade, and most important, do not promise what you cannot deliver. The Gates family craftsmanship has proven, time and again, to be the reliable and professional. We know plaster and stucco inside and out.

Why Plaster:
There are many advantages to plaster. Most importantly is its ability to absorb noise and to deter the spread of fire. Plaster is stronger and more durable than drywall, making it able to withstand more abuse and moisture over time. Not only does plaster add insulation value and structural integrity to a wall or ceiling, it is aesthetically pleasing.

Drywall vs. Plaster:
Drywall is the less expensive option but not necessarily the better one. Because drywall panels are thinner than plaster walls, it is not as effective as a sound barrier. Drywall is not as durable and may damage with the slightest bump. Installation requires continuous sanding to create an even surface, causing dust particles in the air and on surrounding surfaces on a continuous basis.

Plaster is considered a high-end finish, requiring special training and skills. This makes it a more labor intensive process. A plaster wall can create a texture and feel to your home that no other wall can match. With different finish and design options available, you can work with your plaster mason to create a unique work of art that will last a lifetime.
